Each year, the Construction Service Industry Corporation (CISCO) recognizes the top construction in the Chicago area with its Pride in Construction Awards. The awards for 2020 were recently announced, and a number of projects that Powering Chicago’s members contributed to were recognized. Congratulations to all of the electrical contractors listed below, each of which has demonstrated the better construction members of the unionized electrical industry deliver on every project.

CISCO is a non-profit labor management association that brings union construction labor and management representatives together to work cooperatively to strengthen the construction industry. Winning projects must be in the six-county Chicago metropolitan area are selected based on the project’s design, quality of construction, safety record and impact on the surrounding community.

New Construction in Chicago Above $20 million

JMS Electric and M&R Electronic Systems, Inc. worked on a new hotel and rooftop venue at Navy Pier. The project included the construction of the pier’s Family Pavilion, a more than 200,000-square-foot dining, shopping and entertainment area, and Offshore, a 36,000-square-foot bar with a 20,000-square-foot terrace. The project, completed in 2019, was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest rooftop bar. New Construction in Chicago or the Suburbs Below $20 Million

Connelly Electric worked on the University of Chicago Medicine River East Ambulatory Care Center, a 40,000-square-foot outpatient care facility that offers a wide range of primary and specialty care services. Previously a gym, the facility includes approximately three dozen exam rooms, digital kiosks for check-in and payments, a waiting area with work desks with charging outlets, and lights that adjust based on natural lighting in the space, among other features.

Infrastructure (Road, Excavation, Bridge or Utilities)

City Lights, Ltd. worked on the Chicago Department of Transportation’s Lakefront Trail, also known as the Navy Pier Flyover. City Lights is a Certified Minority-Owned (MBE), Women-Owned (WBE), and Disadvantaged (DBE) electrical company specializing in infrastructure, industrial and commercial electrical work.

Rehabilitation in Chicago or the Suburbs

Bandwidth Management, Inc. worked on the Chicago Riverwalk Esplanade & Marketplace, an eastward expansion of the Chicago Riverwalk that replaced and widened a stretch of land bordering the Chicago River by 23,000 square feet. Completed in 2019, the project increased pedestrian space downtown along the river and created a Community Marketplace with seven permanent kiosks and new concession location that features 94 LED dark sky compliant light fixtures.

Residential in Chicago or the Suburbs

City Lights, M&R Electronic Systems, Inc. and Gurtz Electric Company worked on NEMA Chicago, a 76-story building located on Grant Park in the South Loop. Chicago’s tallest rental residence, NEMA features luxury apartments and 70,000 square feet of amenities. Optimized for a tech-friendly lifestyle, NEMA boasts Chicago’s fastest full-building residential internet and smart-home-ready residences. The building also includes contactless entry, elevator and apartment access.
