The ECA Research and Education Committee was proud to have sponsored the seminar, "Foundational Components for Equity / LGBTQ+ Inclusion / Allyship in the Workplace." The session was held as a post-Membership meeting program on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at Maggiano’s Banquets in Oak Brook, IL. The presentation was facilitated by Aster Gilbert, Manager of Training and Public Education, Center on Halsted.
The program focused on the following:
- Foundations of LGBTQ+ terminology, the importance of pronouns, ands aspects of allyship. The terminology reviewed covers gender identity, sex assigned at birth, orientation, the LGBTQIA+ acronym, and gender expression.
- Elements of LGBTQ+ experience, such as coming out, transition, and visibility.
- Participants learned what pronouns are, how to ask for someone’s pronouns, and how to correct someone / themselves if they make a mistake, how to avoid microaggression.
- The allyship section covered what allyship is and actionable steps for being an effective ally at home and in the workplace.
- There was time allocated to provide an overview of the terminology, pronouns, and others details that can set the stage to better understand the company practices.
